A dropshipping field guide: from Kenya to customers abroad, with or without a US LLC.

Container ship being unloaded at a port

A practical record of what it takes to test a dropshipping business from Kenya: choosing whether and where to form a US LLC, checking payment eligibility, finding suppliers, launching a store, and keeping up with filings. An LLC does not guarantee a bank account, payment processor, or profit.

Reviewed 17 October 2026. Fees and platform rules can change; follow the linked official sources before filing or paying.

What You'll Achieve with This Guide:

  • Decide whether to form: Compare Wyoming, Delaware, and the state where you actually operate before spending money.
  • Check payments first: Confirm current identity, address, banking, and country requirements with each provider.
  • Build a High-Converting Store: Design a professional Shopify storefront that attracts and retains customers.
  • Source Winning Products: Discover fast-moving, high-demand items directly from China.
  • Streamline Operations: Automate order fulfillment and shipping for efficiency.
  • Navigate Taxes & Compliance: Understand and manage your tax obligations in both the US and Kenya.

Why I made this guide:

I spent a few years trying dropshipping. It did not become a successful business, but I learned resilience and how much the legal and payment setup matters. Learning to set up an LLC is one part of that experience I still value. These are notes from that attempt, not a promise of results.

Phase 1: Foundational Setup

Validate the business and payment route before paying to form an entity. Formation, EIN, banking, and verification have separate timelines.

Choose a state, then decide whether to form

❯

A US LLC can separate a business from its owner, but protection depends on how it is run and applicable law. It can add tax, agent, and annual fees before you have a sale. If you will operate in a particular US state, forming elsewhere may mean registering there too. Compare the total cost and obligations, not just the filing fee. SBA registration guide.

State fees below exclude registered-agent, expedited, bank, and professional costs. Select a state for its filing path and recurring obligation.

Wyoming: $100 state filing fee for articles of organization. The annual report/license tax is due on the first day of the anniversary month; the minimum is $60, or $0.0002 per dollar of Wyoming assets if higher. A Wyoming registered agent is required. Formation form · Annual report rules.

Consider it when you have no stronger operating-state reason. Low state fees do not eliminate federal or Kenyan tax questions.

Filing path

Check the business name and appoint an in-state registered agent. File directly with the state or pay a formation service; a service is optional. Keep the approved formation document and write an operating agreement. Then request an EIN from the IRS for free. International applicants may need the phone, fax, or mail route rather than the online application. IRS EIN instructions.

Open a US Business Bank Account

❯

Keep business and personal money separate. A US LLC and EIN do not guarantee banking approval: providers verify identity, ownership, business activity, address, and country eligibility. A registered-agent address is not necessarily an acceptable operating address. Check account and payout requirements before paying to form.

Action: Check eligibility before applying

Ask each provider whether it accepts a Kenyan-resident owner, your actual operating address, your business model, and the payout currency you need. Approval and account features vary.
